About Galentine’s Day
An unofficial day, named on a TV comedy, for celebrating the women in our lives.
When is it?
Galentine’s Day is on 13 February every year, the day before Valentine’s Day. The next one is on Saturday 13 February 2027. After that: Saturday 13 February 2027, Sunday 13 February 2028 and Tuesday 13 February 2029.
What is it for?
Galentine’s Day is a day for women to celebrate their female friends. Valentine’s Day is about romance. Galentine’s Day is about the friends who have been there through all of it.
It is not only for people who are single. Mental Floss describes it as a popular choice for single women and for anyone who wants a fun reason to get together with friends, and notes that it can be celebrated on any day of the year.
Where did the name come from?
The name comes from an episode of the US TV comedy Parks and Recreation called “Galentine’s Day” (season 2, episode 16), first shown on NBC on 11 February 2010.
The idea soon spread beyond the show. History.com notes that real women now celebrate the once-fictional day every 13 February, and that there is no shortage of themed cards to buy and send. Mental Floss calls the show the first documented source to use the name.
Galentine’s Day has no organiser. No company, charity or broadcaster runs it. This site has no connection with the show, its makers or NBC.
How do people mark it?
Mental Floss lists spa days, dinners, gifts, notes to friends and nights out as typical ways to celebrate. Others simply make time for a proper catch-up.
